Plus!: A special presentation by Eyesight Collective
Eating locally-grown food should not be a novelty. Eating clean, good food should not be difficult. We aim to be transparent about what we serve and where our food comes from. We help support the local farmers, the local entrepreneurs, and the local economy. We do this with a waste diversion rate of 79%. Our concept is simple, our hearts are big, and our sandwiches are delicious.
We are firm believers that local businesses should support and help each other every step of the way. This includes supporting local farmers and entrepreneurs, without whom, we would not have a business. We always wonder why everyone doesn’t conduct business this way. We will talk about how the idea of Organic Sandwich Company became a reality – from the Boulder Farmers Market to Pearl Street – and how our local partners make it all happen. Plenty of local samples will be shared with our attendees J
What inspired you to become a caterer?
Bob Sargent: Well, I always tell people the story is, is that I just always threw parties. So, between always cooking for my friends and always throwing parties, I always…people always thought it might be a good fit. And my dream was always to open a restaurant, but I just didn’t have the money to start a restaurant. So it was much less expensive to start Savory Cuisines.
Did you have formal training before you started Savory Cuisines and how did Savory Cuisines, the concept, come about.
Bob Sargent: I, actually, was working around town in Boulder, Colorado and before that in Boston. And I kept starting catering divisions for restaurants, and then I went to culinary school here in Boulder, as well, with the hopes of starting a local food business. And had a lot of support from the community, and actually after my training at culinary school, which was good for connections, I used to be the chef at Naropa and that’s where I got my first job from.
Recently, Forbes named CU-Boulder the 18th most entrepreneurial research university in the country.
How does a university become a top 20 entrepreneurial university? Certainly with educational programming, experiential learning, innovative students and faculty and the ability to take an idea to commercialization.
But just as important, it requires a pervasive entrepreneurial culture and mindset across the entire campus, in all disciplines. We are lucky to have a supportive surrounding community, which the Boulder Valley provides, as one of the nation’s most entrepreneurial communities.
Humanwire: Breaking Molds and Bridging Cultures
Humanwire is on a mission to change the way the world responds to refugees. We’ve created an online toolset that enables anyone to directly connect with a refugee in need and then provide effective, personalized support no matter where they are.
We believe Humanwire’s scalable, democratized model of support is a realistic solution for solving the world’s displacement crisis.
During this session our co-founder Andrew Baron will give background on how Humanwire got started, what makes our model so different and how we tackle age-old challenge around the globe in a new way.
We’ll also have the group participate in an exercise to illustrate the tricky nature of shifting the rigid notion of what a charity can be in the minds of the public.
Several years ago, Jamba Dunn had a revelation: to build one of the few kombucha taprooms in existence and redefine the limits of fermented tea.
Jamba had been brewing kombucha for friends and family, with inspiration from his toddler daughter (the rowdy mermaid herself). In fall 2013, Jamba met Danielle Martin, the brewer responsible for starting kombucha brewing operations for Brew Dr. Kombucha in Portland. The two began relearning whay they thought they knew of brewing, flavoring and microbiology.
The two opened the taproom in April 2014, acquired some key volunteers, and started serving hand-crafted, organic, and innovative kombucha made from ingredients deliberately selected for their taste and health benefits.

Large Fraudulent Networks and the Impact of Machine Learning
Technological advances have introduced new and complex ways in which individuals may become victims to fraud. Unraveling the complex fraud schemes that hurt so many individuals is becoming more and more difficult due to the size and variety of data required to track down the culprits. Pen-Link’s big data analytics team is aiding law enforcement with this problem (and many other problems) by using machine learning to search massive amounts of data to discover important patterns and visualize trends.
